Below are some activities for you to work through while you are isolating (as long as you are well enough to work). The plan is that this post will become a permeanent page on our class blog but it’s just here for the time being as a post. Do one maths activity and one English activity per day and then choose from the additional activities at the bottom if you want to do more. Please don’t do any of this work unless you are isolating but feeling well. If you’re ill and not well enough to be at school then you should be resting.
- Number Review
Please click on the link below to take you to the Number Review page from Target Your Maths. This is a review of the work we did in week 2 on place value, ordering numbers, rounding and negative numbers. The answers are on page 2 so you can mark your work once you’ve done it.
- Ordering Numbers and Rounding
This activity focuses more on ordering numbers and rounding and requires you to use the greater than and less than symbols. Here is the link for the activity:

- Multiplication Pyramids
In multiplication pyramids, pairs of numbers are multiplied together to make the number above them. Have a go at solving the multiplication pyramid puzzles in the link below. Choose section A, B or C according to your confidence and understanding.
- Multiplying and Dividing by 10, 100 and 1000
Remember when multiplying by 10 you move all the digits one place to the left to make the number ten times bigger because 10 has one zero. When multiplying by 100, you do the same thing but all the digits move two places to the left because 100 has two zeros and for 1000, three places to the left. When dividing by 10, 100 or 1000 we are making the original number smaller so we do the opposite and move the digits to the right. Try it out using the sheets in the link below:

- Maths Mystery
The link below will take you to a maths mystery called The Mystery of the Missing Knight. The idea of the game is that you solve a mystery by working through a range of different maths puzzles and activities. At the end of each activity you can cross people off your list of suspects (it’s a bit like the game Cluedo – you have a list of suspects and instead of travelling round the board asking questions you solve maths questions and eventually you will be left with one suspect.) Try to solve all the clues so you can find out who the culprit is! As the document is a PDF, the answers are at the end of it. Make sure you don’t look ahead or you’ll ruin it for yourself:
This theme of work is based on Wonder by R J Palacio. There are five day’s work but don’t worry if you’re not off long enough to do them all; just start at day one.
This work is all about the moving story of August Pullman.
Due to the sensitive nature of the content of this book, it is strongly advised that parents monitor and support the reading and watching of clips throughout this unit with ongoing discussion.
When following links online, parents should monitor that children are remaining on that page only and are keeping safe online.
Whether you have read the book before, seen the film or it is new to you, you will enjoy a week of delving into the world of Auggie.
LI – to make judgements about characters using evidence from the text
|1) Read and enjoy up to the chapter ‘First Day Jitters.’ (Page 35 if you have the book)
2) What are your first impressions of the following characters? Jot down a few ideas for each character
focusing only on what you have read. (Not what you know if you have read/seen Wonder before!)
You might have more than one first impression of a character, in which case write them all.

LI – to write a diary entry.
- Imagine you are Auggie. How would you be feeling before your first day at school?
Write a short diary entry (no more than two paragraphs) for the night before you start school. Consider the following:
– your thoughts and feelings;
– your hopes for the day;
– your fears for the day.
2) Now watch the following clips from the film (PG certificate):
3)Then read the chapter ‘Choose Kind’ (pg45 in the book) up to the chapter ‘September’ (pg61 in the book).
4) Consider how Auggie’s first day actually went.
Write another diary entry as Auggie at the end of this first day.
Consider the following:
- Write about the events of the day in chronological order (the order they happened throughout the day)
- Add in your thoughts and feelings.
- Hopes/fears for the next day.
- Hopes/fears for friendships.
LI – to produce an information page for a given audience.

On the home page, scroll down to the section ‘Meet Our Kids.’ Take a look at a few real-life stories.
Task 2. Produce an information page for a children’s magazine all about Treacher Collins Syndrome. Think about including the following: Facts about the syndrome and how it affects people; a phrase or hashtag about the importance of being kind; reference to the book; reference to stopping bullying; any useful websites.
You can carry out your own research too to help you. Be as creative as you can and make your page visually appealing. Remember to think about the purpose and audience. The purpose is to provide information about Treacher Collins Syndrome. The audience is children.
Poetry – Beautifully different, wonderfully the same!
LI – to write poetry using a given format.

Look up the word ‘ugly’ in a dictionary/Word Hippo (online dictionary) Now read this poem:
(I bet you can’t read it without actually singing!) What does ‘unique’ mean? Look it up in a dictionary and write down the definition. Can you find some synonyms for the word unique? Note them down. We are all unique! What makes you unique? Write down a list of things that make you unique. It could be something unique about your appearance, about your family, about your hobbies/interests etc.
Task 2. Write your ‘Unique’ poem all about you. Follow this format:

Here is an example to look at:

You can have as many lines as you want in your poem. Share your finished poem with someone that you live with.

Today you are going to write your own opening chapter about a child’s first day at school; a child who is different in some way.

Task 2. Choose one of the above as a character for your story. Think about what you have read/watched this week regarding Auggie. See the tables below for a way to plan your story. After you have planned your story, write your first chapter. Read back your chapter out loud and check back over your spelling and punctuation.

Many of us used the BBC Online Learning during lockdown. Even though children are now back at school, the BBC have produced some new online lessons for the autumn term which would give you lots to go at while you’re off school. Follow this link to take you to the website:
Once there, you can choose from maths, English, science, history and geography.
I would recommend the following lessons:
English – The Weird and wonderful world of Roald Dahl and Writing for different purposes.
Maths – Number and Place Value, Addition and Subtraction, Multiplication and Division.
Science – Science Skills
History – World War One
Geography – Longitude and Latitude, Human Geography – Resources and Trade
