On June 12th Oak class had to sort out Mrs Mort’s materials mess up, she’d had an accident and created a mess which the children were tasked with sorting. In groups of three the children had to use their knowledge of materials to separate the mixture without touching it with their hands! They were keen to dive straight in but Mrs Mort needed them to plan each step carefully so that one material was left over at each stage. After a few rounds using various sized sieves, magnets and tweezers they were left with salt and sand. What to do next? Through video clips they discovered that salt dissolves in water to make a solution and they can filter the mixture to leave sand. Evaporating the water from a petri dish will leave the salt. We had a great afternoon and the children learnt lots of new vocabulary and techniques for separating mixtures!
