Leighton Moss Trip June 2022

Today Willow Class headed north on the M6 to Silverdale where the local RSPB Nature Reserve is situated at Leighton Moss.

We arrived all eager to find out what we were doing and to get going!

We split into 2 groups the Bitterns and the Marsh Harriers.  We were greeted by Carol, Jenny, Cathy and Jenny.  For our first activity we either did pond dipping or went on to learn about the different breed of birds which visit the Nature Reserve and to use binoculars in the hide and take a walk up the ‘Skywalk’.  The groups did one activity then we swapped over after lunch time.

We have learnt lots, seen lots, asked lots of questions and listened to lots of interesting things.

The children were a real credit to themselves, to school and to you as parents.  The centre staff were most impressed with their behaviour, manners and maturity.

The Bitterns went pond dipping for their morning session and were brilliant at it.  They found lots of really interesting invertebrates in the water. There was lots of discovering and interest in what they found there.  Everyone took turns to use the nets and the magnifying glasses.

Then both groups met up for lunch in the sunken garden area which was lovely and shady but we had lots of feathery friends to join us!!

After lunch the Marsh Harriers went pond dipping whilst the Bitterns were occupied learning about bird sounds, their nests and using mini microscopes to look at different feathers..  Then there was a short walk to Lillian’s hide where the children spotted Marsh Harriers swooping about and lots of gulls making nests and protecting their young. Then it was onto the hi-life! walking up the stairs to the high viewing platform called the ‘Skywalk’.  From here you could see all the marsh areas of the reserve and lots of the reed beds and grasses.  We could also see out to Morecambe Bay.
