Hi Beech class,

I hope you are all well and have enjoyed the long weekend we have just had. I would love to see what you got up to and how you celebrated VE Day so please send any pictures over if you would like.

English

Lots of you asked to look at the book of Commotion in the Ocean so that is the focus for this week in English.

Explain this book is a collection of poems; ask children if they know what poetry is.  We have looked at poems in class – autumn poems and senses poems.

Explain that poetry is a collection of words arranged in patterns of sound and often includes descriptive and rhyming words. This book has lots of rhyming words (words that sound the same) can you spot any as you listen?

Today’s English is a practical activity.

Use these pages from the books:

english day 1 book pages

Can you read the descriptions of the different sea creatures with your adult?

Select a creature. Can you create actions to help you to act out their verse?

You could have a go at a different creature too if you like?

Maths

This week in maths we are looking at position and direction. This is something we had not covered in class as it had not come up in our curriculum yet. I think however, the children will enjoy it and be ok with their new learning.

Today we are looking at positional language. This is an important place to start as it is really important the children understand the vocabulary before we add more directions later in the week.

maths word mat day 1 – 2

Positional language (prepositions) refers to the place where something or someone is, often in relation to other things, such as over, under, beside or beneath.

Look at this introduction first:

Then have a go at this:

Then if you want more to do you can describe where the cat is here:

maths day 1 activity 2

Children don’t have to record this learning, they can just tell you verbally the different positions. We don’t always record maths formally every day, we do lots of practical lessons in class as it is a really good way for children to learn.

Challenge

Have a go at this:

Don’t forget to explain how do you know.

Phonics

Today we are looking at ph.
