Welcome back!

The BBC have been very busy organising home school learning for the whole country! They are providing English and Maths lessons for each year group everyday and one other curriculum subject. Mrs FitzGerald and I would like you to complete the English and Maths activity for today. We feel that some of the activities are quite easy and may not take too long therefore we are setting an extension task everyday for both English and Maths. At the end of the week we would like your feedback with how the BBC work has been alongside the other work we have set for you.

English

Extension Focus Theme for Week 1: It’s Magic!

This week focuses on all things magic! You will explore extracts from the ‘The Nowhere Emporium’ by Ross Mackenzie, ‘Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone’ by JK Rowling and the poem ‘The Magic Box’ by Kit Wright. Based on this, you will then write your own opening chapter based on a magical shop.

Day 1 – Monday

Go to BBC website https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/tags/zncsscw/year-6-lessons/1

Find the English lesson for today titled – Day 1 Week 1 (it is below the Day 4 Week 1 so you will need to scroll down a bit -it was in this position on Friday!)

Record the LI below and then for the writing task it sends you to a twinkl sheet – you can either print out the sheet or copy the work into your home learning book.

LI – To use and identify nouns and pronouns

Extension English task

LI – To identify key phrases and evidence to support an idea.

  • Read the prologue of the Nowhere Emporium By Ross MacKenzie – pages 7-10.

Type in the search bar to find the book. Then click on read an extract.

(You will need to become a member of the LoveReading4Kids community. Membership is free).

  • Select your ten favourite words/phrases from the prologue and write them down.

Then select your overall favourite and explain why you have chosen this.

  • ‘The Nowhere Emporium is magic.’ Find all the evidence in the text which supports this statement.

  • Create a poster to advertise/persuade someone to enter the Nowhere Emporium based on what you have read. Think about selecting some of your favourite words/phrases from the first activity to use for your poster.

  • Based on what you have read, would you want to read this book? Give reasons for your answer.

Maths

For maths we would like you to use the BBC website:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/tags/zncsscw/year-6-lessons/1

Maths is easier to find than English it is titled 20 April Maths and is on the same page as the English work. It looks like you will have one main page for each week of lessons.

LI – To round numbers

Maths Extension

Usually we would be right in the middle of SATs revision but as we are not having that delight this year Mrs FitzGerald and I thought that we would start this term with some maths mystery games that we play after SATs. The idea of the game is that you solve a mystery by working through a range of different puzzles and activities. At the end of each activity you can cross people off your list of suspects (It’s a bit like the game Cluedo – you have a list of suspects and instead of travelling round the board asking questions you solve maths questions and eventually you will be left with one suspect.) The first game to be played is ‘Easter Chocolate Mystery’.  Either print out page 2 or write down the names of the suspects (you don’t have to write out their details if you don’t want to as it may take too long but you will need to keep referring to page 2 to see which suspects can be crossed off).  Solve clues 1, 2 and 3.  For clue 2 it says to measure the angles, if you don’t have a protractor you can estimate the angles. We will continue with the rest of the clues tomorrow and find out who the culprit is!

Science

Before you begin today’s science lesson you need to know that I am expecting it to go over to next week’s lesson too. The first thing you need to do is decide which Activity Diet and Exercise sheet you wish to use to accompany the power point presentation. Mild is the one star sheet, two star is spicy and three star is hot. You can print out the star sheet you wish to use or you can copy the headings into your home learning book.

Activity Sheet Diet and Exercise Planning

Now you are ready to read the power point presentation. Complete the exercises in the presentation eg the Venn diagram then make notes as you go through the presentation or read the presentation then refer back to it. Next complete your Activity Diet and Exercise sheet (the presentation does give more detail than I would be expecting in your written work).

Science Lesson Presentation Healthy Lifestyle Part 2

Finally using the information that you have recorded on your Activity Diet and Exercise sheet you are to create an explanation about the importance of diet and a healthy lifestyle; you can create a poster, leaflet or A4 Write Stuff format. I have attached some blank examples for you to use if you wish or you can design your own version if you wish. This activity will go over into next week’s lesson.

Stilling time

The next area we would be looking at in stilling time is ‘connecting’. Connecting is important for our wellbeing. We connect in different ways through: touch, sight, speech, listening. To help us connect we use a part of the brain called the Ventral Striatum, it is located towards the centre of the brain and works closely with the Pre Frontal Cortex (the choice making part of the brain) and the Anterior Cingulate Cortex (the part of the brain that helps us focus).  Connect with someone in your household by offering to do a shoulder or back massage. Talk about the movements you will do and ask if you need to make the movements softer or stronger. Then swap round.

Hope you all enjoy your learning, remember you can message on the blog or email me if you need to.

Love

Mrs Poole
